Traveler ReviewsWhat a disapointment
Reviewed by Scubasteve647604 on Jan 5, 2011After reading good reports on trip advisor I took my wife for what I thought would be a very special evening. When we 1st arrived we were shown to a nice seated area for a cocktail which were nice. Then the waiter returned and asked us if we would like to pay for our drinks before we went to the table, I told him we would pay for everything on the one bill at which point he stropped off as he wasn?t going to get a tip.
We were shown to a nice table but that was the good part as from there it was down hill. The service was very slow as some people who came in after us were served before we had received our bread basket or our wine which only came after prompting the waiter.
There were 2 girls on the next table to us who were smoking (it was a Non smoking area) but the waiters did not ask them to put the cigarettes out as they were to busy flirting with them. After I confirmed it was non smoking they were then asked to stop smoking.
When the food eventually arrived it was mediocre at best the steak I had was very gristly and not worth the money. The food prices looked reasonable until you add on the 28% in surcharges. I have eaten in a lot of restaurants, some good some not so but this was a RIP OFF. They are getting bookings on the name not the quality of the food. I would strongly recommend avoiding this place as it appears to be going down hill. I can however highly recommend La marina, they even pick you up and return you to your hotel after the meal AVOID THE TAMARND at all costs.
The bill for 2 x 3 course meals would have been £50 but with taxes it was £80
Rip off
Reviewed by h_slater on Jan 2, 2011This restaurant has a beatiful setting but sadly the rest is lacking.
The staff were a little grumpy and we had to wait 30 minutes for the bread basket and only got it because we reminded them.
The menu choice and prices look reasonable until you read the SMALL PRINT!
10% service charge, 2% training charge and 16% VAT totalling a huge 28% to be added to your bill!! The food was ok but certainly not worth the money once the surcharges were added! Felt ripped off as the staff still looked for a tip after we paid!!
I wouldn't recommend anyone to go here unless you have money to throw away, try La Marina instead (see seperate report)
Superb service, brilliant setting and wonderful food
Reviewed by yorkielyn on Sep 26, 2010Treated ourselves to a meal at The Tamarind whilst staying at the Sarova Whitesands Hotel in Mombasa, about a 15 minute taxi ride away. Staff were welcoming and attentive. we hadn't booked which meant we didn't get a table on the edge of the terrace but it was still lovely. Excellent meal beautifully served , no complaints at all!!
in a league of its own
Reviewed by timetraveller64 on Aug 25, 2010during vacation in kenya last week i had dinner with my family at the tamarind where i had not been since 2010. it was absolutely excellent, brilliant food and very good value and the location is unbeatable. we had crab claws and calemari as started followed by lobster for my wife, ostrich fillet for my youngest child and then a seafood platter for my oldest son and me - excellent quality and more than we could eat. southafrican sauvignon blanc reasonable priced ...... would definitely go again......
Great location, mediocre food
Reviewed by alyv27 on Aug 12, 2010Tamarind's location, view and ambience will always win it patrons. But unfortunately the food, while sounding tempting on the menu, doesn't live up to expectations. Prices are high and the food bland and not particularly special. I ate at Tamarind two nights in a row - the first time for pleasure, the second for business - and the experience was consistent. Disappointing, I wanted to love the place.
